Just Dan

With SVO being such a small department, it was inevitable that we would be a close knit community in which we all shared the same passions. The given passion for automobiles ran through us all like the very blood in our veins, but especially with Dan. He loved anything with wheels or a motor, something that could be driven to the limit - that was his forte. I remember well in XKR+ being driven by Dan around the lanes surrounding Henley and wondering just how close to the scenery we would get.
Blair recounts the morning discussions of the latest kart race. Dan, centre stage, would tell of daring do and act the part, with that imaginary small steering wheel in his hands, turning constantly with synchronized body movements to add to the drama. Except the morning he arrived nursing broken ribs, which strangely seemed to calm his enthusiasm! For days after, we took great delight in making him laugh; broken rib recipients will understand.
Dan was great company with his dry wit and ever impish grin which made our daily office life enjoyable. One time, Dan and I took a high security X350 to the Ring for handling / performance sign off in company with a couple of gentlemen from Government Protection Squad, in another XJ. We were late for the ferry, so enquired from said personnel what would we do about speeding and cameras. “JFDI” was the reply “we have clearance”. We made the ferry!
Disembarkation back in the UK was exciting when Dan drove straight through Border Control and around the attendant barriers towards the exit. In his defence it was impossible to hear anything outside the vehicle, see much through the 38mm thick distorted windshield and with the driver door drop glass severely limited, we were pretty much cocooned. It was only when we saw men with guns running after us that the penny dropped. Our escorts rescued us once more and persuaded the authorities out of repercussions with mention of the Prime Minister’s name.
Apropos the guns - we were in an armoured vehicle. Oh the irony!
Of recent past our curry nights gave us the opportunity to catch up with Dan to hear of his latest venture or adventure, ever full of passion but always accompanied by a very perceptive mind.
Latterly Carmel and I spent a magical day with Dan and Penny at Yarningale Farm, along with Joy Chand and the kids. Dan was so full of enthusiasm and vision with his plans for the farm, the house and his business. A walk up to the Fleur for lunch and a pint made the day complete.
We will miss you Dan and feel privileged to have known you.
